Off-road season is almost here.
But before you hook up the trailer and head out for that first weekend, now is the time to ask yourself:
Is everything actually ready?
Not just your UTV. We're talking about the RV or toy hauler, machines, trailer, camping equipment, riding gear, accessories and those upgrades you've been saying you'll do before next season. Don't wait until the night before your first trip. Start getting ready now.
1. Get Your RV or Toy Hauler Ready
Your RV or toy hauler may have been sitting for months, so give yourself plenty of time to go through it. Check the systems and maintenance items recommended by your manufacturer, including things such as: Tires and tire pressure, Wheel and brake condition, Batteries, Generator, Exterior and interior lights, Water system, Electrical system, Propane equipment, Hitch and towing equipment, Roof, seals and exterior, Awning, Slides, Safety equipment.
Run everything before you leave home. You don't want to arrive at camp and discover your generator won't start, a battery is dead, or something you could have fixed weeks ago isn't working.
2. Get the Toys Running
Whether you're bringing a UTV, side-by-side, ATV, dirt bike, or another off-road machine, don't assume it's ready just because it ran perfectly last season. Start it. Drive it. Inspect it. Check the maintenance requirements for your particular machine.
Look at the tires, battery, brakes, fluids, air filter, suspension, belts, lights, and other critical components. If something needs servicing, take care of it now. The goal is simple: When that first weekend arrives, you should be loading machines not trying to repair them.
3. Go Through Your Riding & Safety Gear
When was the last time you actually emptied your riding bags and checked everything? Pull it all out. Inspect helmets and protective equipment. Find the missing goggles. Replace damaged equipment. Restock your first-aid kit. Check communication equipment and make sure everything you depend on is working. And don't forget the little things. Those are usually what everyone realizes they forgot after arriving at camp.
4. Check Your Tools, Spare Parts & Recovery Equipment
Open the toolbox before you need it. Make sure the tools you thought were inside are actually there. Depending on your machines and riding conditions, this may be a good time to check your tire-repair equipment, air source, spare parts, recovery equipment, flashlights, batteries, chargers, and other emergency supplies. Preparing now can save an entire weekend later.
5. What Needed an Upgrade Last Season?
This is the part people forget. Think back to your last few trips. What annoyed you? Was your campsite too dark? Did you need better chairs? Did you constantly fight with extension cords? Did you need additional storage?
Was your outdoor lighting terrible? Did you need better communication equipment? Was there something on the trailer you kept saying you were going to replace? And here's a big one: Did you have trouble finding camp at night? If you spent last season saying: “Before next season, we're getting one of those.” Now is the time.
